Chapter Three

Connie woke early the next morning, her body sore, her mind disoriented. She sat up and looked around the unfamiliar surroundings, as the events of the previous evening flooded her mind. It was a pleasant memory. With a smile, she laid back against the plush pillows, wanting to bask in the afterglow for as long as possible.

The unknown man was gone, as were all traces of him in the room. If it weren’t for the unfamiliar house and her satiated body, she would have wondered if it were a dream. It wasn’t, though, and come what may, she’d never regret the night of passion she’d experienced in his arms.

The mask was still on her face. Connie pulled it off as she got out of the bed. She was tempted to leave it behind, but in the end, she decided to keep it as a reminder of the surreal night she’d experienced. As the short man had said, it was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime deal.

Leisurely dressing, she wondered how she would spend her day. It wasn’t as if she had anything to rush home for. Her marriage was over, it had been since the day her husband had mentally checked out. Whether or not they divorced, the connection between them was dissolved. It was impossible to sustain a marriage when only one person wanted it.

The amazing sex had removed some of the sting from John’s rejection. Left up to him, he would have delegated her to the shelf as a frumpy, unwanted housewife. Thankfully, she’d had the opportunity to prove otherwise. A shudder went through her at the thought of spending her life trapped at home with a man that didn’t even want her.

Connie sighed. She'd regained some of her self-esteem, but it had been done in a completely unorthodox manner. Thoughts of her marriage still hurt, as John had been the love of her life. He’d changed terms of the contract, though, when he’d grown cold. The events of the night before couldn't fix that. It was time for her to renegotiate the terms of her marriage. After all, it was 1953 and women had more rights than ever. He'd have to step up to the plate, or she was gone. It was that simple.

Opening the door, Connie stopped to listen. There wasn't a whisper of sound. She didn’t expect to hear music at this time of morning, but she at least expected some noise. Going down the stairs, her puzzlement deepened. The furniture was covered with old sheets, the heavy draperies closed and dusty. It was silent, the type of silence that only came from a completely empty house.

She didn’t bother to call out for anyone because she knew without a doubt, there was nobody else there. It was an eerie feeling, one that left her chilled. Whoever had arranged her night of pleasure was cloaked in secretiveness, a hidden society that offered women like herself a rare opportunity. She doubted they ever used the same place twice. There was something magical about that, even if it was unexplainable.
